SIMPLY AMONG THEIR BEST – John Profetto – Hamilton, Ontario Canada
Way Out West is generally regarded as Laurel and Hardy’s best feature film.Next to Sons Of The Desert.It is the only other L&H film to be a Stan Laurel Production(the other being Our Relations from a year earlier).Definetly one of my favourite L&H films.Not a dull moment in the movie.Rarely do we actually see Stan laugh.Not only is this one of their films where Oliver sings beautifully,but Stan also sings with a cartoonish trick voice.There are a lot of special effects in this movie as well.Such as Stan igniting his thumb,the boys running away from the sheriff in fast motion,and Stan trying to pull Ollie out of a trapdoor by the head and stretching Ollie’s neck impossibley high in the process.
Way Out West was definetly a must for my Laurel & Hardy collection!
Laurel & Hardy: Way Out West [VHS]: : One of Laurel and Hardy’s greatest efforts in the full-length form. They play a pair of unlikely prospectors whose best pal has died, leaving the deed to a rich gold mine. It’s up to them to deliver the deed to his daughter. She, however, is a scullery maid in the saloon of unsavory Jimmy Finlayson, who tries to pass off his own wife as the grieving heiress. This film includes several classic moments, including a delightful song-and-dance by L&H and a struggle over the deed itself, in which Stanley is tickled nearly to death. Way Out West is a Laurel and Hardy comedy film released in 1937. It was directed by James W. Horne, produced by Stan Laurel and distributed by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Stan and Ollie, after consorting with Seymore “Sy” Roberts, an old prospector, have been entrusted to deliver the deed to a gold mine the prospector discovered to the man’s daughter, Mary Roberts (Rosina Lawrence), a poor young woman living in Brushwood Gulch who is consistently victimized by her cruel guardians, saloon owner Mickey Finn (James Finlayson), and his equally-cruel saloon-singer wife, Lola Marcel (Sharon Lynne).
